Swimmers are endlessly hungry. I could eat a big meal and be hungry within an hour. Instead of eating a lot during one sitting, I learned to eat small and eat often. You should feel like you could go for a run after a meal.

One caveat: the participants in those studies were mostly white and middle class.
The athletes feared injury. If they were hurt, they could not train; if they could not train, they could not compete; if they did not compete, they could not earn money. There is no union, or sick pay, in road running.

The Berlin Marathon, once a pleasant but unremarkable jaunt through the Grunewald forest, was redirected through the streets of West Berlin in 1981. In doing so, it became part of the city for a day. After the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, the race was rerouted again so that it passed through the old East and West Berlin. In that first true city-wide race, on 30 September 1990, three days before Germany was officially reunified, many runners wept as they passed underneath the Brandenburg Gate.
